MacBook keyboard sound effect

For a MacBook typing sound, use khenshom's close-up recording of a 2018 MacBook Pro above. It has multiple keystrokes and single clicks at different speeds, recorded with a shotgun mic at 24-bit, 48 kHz. It's the butterfly keyboard, not the scissor keys on current MacBooks, so it won't match a new MacBook exactly. More on that in the 2018 MacBook Pro butterfly keyboard sound test.

Using them in a video

  1. Download the original from its Freesound page. Keep the page link with your project files.
  2. Drop it on your timeline in CapCut, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve or iMovie.
  3. Cut single strikes at the start of each transient if you need one-shots. The WhiteFox and MacBook recordings include isolated keys.
  4. Vary the takes. Repeating one strike sounds mechanical in the wrong way; use several from the same session.
  5. Mix it under the voice. Key sounds are short and bright, so they cut through at a low level. The mono files (MX Red, Gateron Red, Laptop, Selectric bell, Olivetti, Olivetti bell) can be panned.

Sound effect questions

Can I use these Freesound recordings in YouTube videos?

Yes. Each one is marked CC0 1.0 on Freesound, which waives copyright: you can copy, edit and publish it, including in monetized and commercial work, without asking. Keep the Freesound link as your record of the license.

Where do these recordings come from?

From Freesound, where each recordist uploaded them as CC0. They are the sources of Keyslam's 15 sound packs; Keyslam cuts them into single keystrokes and levels them for the app.

Do I have to credit the recordists?

CC0 doesn't require it. Crediting is still a kind thing to do, and the names and links are on this page if you want to.

Can I download Keyslam's sliced takes here?

No. This page links to the original recordings on Freesound. The cut and leveled takes are bundled inside the Keyslam Mac app, and you can hear them on this page with the play buttons.
