Klack is a $4.99 Mac App Store app with seven recorded switch sets. Its App Store version needs macOS 15, and it has no trial. Keyslam runs on macOS 13 Ventura and later, costs $3.99 once and lets you try everything for 7 days.
Updated

Short answer: If Klack won't install on your Mac, or you'd like to try before you pay, Keyslam covers both. It runs on macOS 13 Ventura and later (Klack's App Store version needs macOS 15), has a 7-day free trial (Klack has none), costs $3.99 once (Klack is $4.99), and on MacBooks with Apple's motion sensor the sound follows how hard you type. Klack is still the better pick if you want to buy through the Mac App Store.

Where Keyslam differs, in order
1. macOS 13 vs macOS 15
Klack's App Store version needs macOS 15 Sequoia. Keyslam needs macOS 13 Ventura. Apple's compatibility lists stop the 2017 MacBook Pro and iMac at Ventura and the 2018 and 2019 MacBook Air at Sonoma, so Klack's App Store version won't install on those Macs and Keyslam will. Which Macs stop at Ventura or Sonoma.
2. A 7-day trial vs none
Everything is unlocked during the 7-day free trial, with no account, email or card. Klack's FAQ answers “No” to trying before you buy and points you to its preview buttons instead.
3. $3.99 vs $4.99
One payment of $3.99, lifetime, with free updates. The personal license covers all the Macs you own; Klack's covers up to 5 devices.
4. Force sensing
On MacBooks with the motion sensor (M1 Pro or M1 Max and later, and M2 and later) Keyslam reads the accelerometer about 800 times a second and picks real strikes from four strength bands. Klack doesn't advertise anything like it. None of the 42 Mac App Store keyboard-sound apps we checked offers force sensing; Keyslam is sold directly, not through the App Store.
When Klack is the better choice
- You want the Mac App Store. Klack installs and updates through it, and Apple handles App Store refunds. Keyslam is a direct download.
- You like one of its seven switch sets. NovelKeys Cream, Gateron Milky Yellow and the rest are switches Keyslam doesn't have. Keyslam's packs are different hardware: MX Blue, MX Brown, MX Red, MX Black, Gateron Red, Topre, Leopold, WhiteFox, Rainy 75, Unicomp, Model F, Vintage Technics, Laptop, Selectric, Olivetti.
- You want it to go quiet by itself in more situations. Klack's sleep triggers cover screen sharing, Focus, media and calendar events. Keyslam pauses on its own only while an app is using the microphone.
If you're on macOS 15 and none of the four differences above matters to you, Klack is a fine choice.
Hear a few switch types first
Klack lets you preview its switches on tryklack.com. You can do the same here. Vintage Technics is a board with Gateron Yellow switches, the closest Keyslam has to Klack's Gateron Milky Yellow set; the others cover linear, tactile, Topre and clicky.
Klack questions
Is Klack free?
No. Klack is $4.99 on the Mac App Store and has no free trial; its FAQ suggests previewing the switches on its site, and it offers a full refund within 14 days (App Store purchases go through Apple). For apps that cost nothing, see our roundup of free keyboard sound apps for Mac.
Is Klack available for Windows?
We found no Windows version. Its App Store listing says “Only for Mac”, and tryklack.com's buy button is for Mac. Klakk, a different app from a different developer, sells Mac and Windows editions for $4.49 each.
Klack vs Klakk: what's the difference?
They are two different apps with near-identical names. Klakk's own site says: “Klakk (K-l-a-k-k) and Klack (K-l-a-c-k) are separate apps from different developers.” Klack is Henrik Ruscon's app, sold for Mac only, and its App Store version needs macOS 15. Klakk runs on Mac and Windows; its Mac website edition needs macOS 14 and comes with a 3-day trial.
Klack or Keyslam: which should I get?
Get Klack if you want the Mac App Store, one of its seven switch sets or its sleep triggers, and your Mac runs macOS 15. Get Keyslam if you're on macOS 13 or 14, want 7 days to try it, or want the sound to follow how hard you type on a MacBook with the motion sensor.
Try Keyslam for 7 days before you spend $3.99.
Runs on macOS 13 Ventura and later, Apple silicon or Intel. 15 real keyboards and typewriters.
