System requirements

  • macOS 13 Ventura or later, on any Mac with Apple silicon or an Intel processor.
  • About 16 MB of disk space.
  • Speakers or headphones. The sounds play through your current output, including AirPods.
  • For force sensing: MacBook Pro with M1 Pro or M1 Max and later, or MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with M2 and later. Every other Mac plays all the sounds at a strength you pick. See which MacBooks have the motion sensor and keyboard sounds on Intel Macs and desktops.
  • Internet: only in your browser, to download and to pay. The app itself never goes online.

How to install Keyslam

Setup takes about a minute.

  1. Open the .dmg and drag Keyslam onto the Applications folder next to it.
  2. Open Keyslam from Applications. macOS asks if you're sure you want to open an app downloaded from the internet; click Open. A keyboard icon appears in the menu bar.
  3. Allow Input Monitoring. Click the icon, then Open Settings on the “Keyslam needs Input Monitoring” card, and turn Keyslam on under Privacy & Security › Input Monitoring. If the menu then shows Relaunch Keyslam, click it.
  4. Pick a board, set the volume and type. Your 7-day trial starts on this first launch, with no account or card.
  5. Optional: tick Open at login so the sounds are back after every restart.

If macOS says Keyslam can't be opened

The copy from keyslam.com is notarized by Apple, so the only prompt you should see is the usual one for apps from the internet. If macOS instead says Apple can't check Keyslam for malicious software, or that it's damaged, that copy didn't come from this page or the download broke. Move it to the Trash and download it again from keyslam.com. Don't override the warning for a copy you got somewhere else.

Updating

Keyslam doesn't check for updates by itself, because it makes no network connections. New versions are listed on the changelog and on this page. To update, quit Keyslam, download the new .dmg and drag it over the old copy. Your license, trial date and settings carry over. If macOS asks for Input Monitoring again, switch it back on.

Uninstalling

  1. Quit Keyslam from its menu (the Quit button at the bottom).
  2. Drag Keyslam from Applications to the Trash.
  3. Remove it from Input Monitoring in System Settings › Privacy & Security with the minus button.
  4. Optional: delete ~/Library/Application Support/Keyslam if you added your own packs.

Your license stays in your Mac's login Keychain, so if you reinstall later, Keyslam is still activated.
